Board Overview
The Board of Trustees is the custodian of the mission of the school. The members safeguard the mission by guaranteeing the school operates in accordance with the principles on which it was founded. This guarantee is expressed in the form of the policies and purposes established and constantly reviewed by the Board that are the framework within which the administration of the School carries out daily and long-term operations. The Board appoints the Head of School and delegates to that person the responsibility for its daily operation. Board meetings are normally held on a monthly basis.
The Head of School is the chief administrator of school operations, and as such sees to it that the school's purpose is achieved on a daily basis. The Head handles all tasks as described in his/her job description, generally being responsible for the health and safety of the children and staff and the efficient operation of a place of learning. In addition, the Head is an educational leader, communicating frequently with the Board president any new or pertinent opinions he/she has on educational initiatives at the school. The Head of school works with the faculty to insure, among other things, that professional development plans are being met, and to discuss the blossoming of the mission in the individual classrooms.
The Head of School and the President of the Board meet frequently to facilitate open communication and to keep policy and operations on track. Three times a year the Board conducts a formal performance review with the Head of school based on mutually identified goals for both the Head's personal professional development and for the school's operations. Once a year the faculty and staff provide confidential feedback to the Head of School about his/her leadership strengths.
As established in article 2 of the By-laws, Board Committees assist both the Board and the Head of School and include parents and teachers in their membership. Many of the important decisions that will be ultimately decided upon by the Board are brought to the committees first. The committees identify and clarify the issues brought before them and generally have a large degree of influence on the final decision process taken by the Board. It should be noted that even though the committees can exert considerable influence, final decisions on major matters are made by the full Board.
The Board elects officers at the annual meeting in June. There must be a President, Treasurer and Clerk (also known as the recording secretary.) Frequently there is also a vice president named when there is a particular initiative to be addressed by the Board in the upcoming year, such as real estate or charter renewal. A corresponding secretary to handle communication within the community and from external sources may also be named if the Board feels there is a need.
