About the Barnes and Nobles November 20, 2009 Art Show
Ms. Russell's 5th grade students created name pattern designs.
Lettering and the variety of font styles were introduced and practiced.
The students also created optical illusions.

The 7th grade students created sculptures.
The students were challenged with making a sculpture that had extreme height, strength, or abstraction.
We finished our sculpture unit with a lesson on 3D French Monuments.

The 7th grade students made symbolic self portrait.
They combined images and symbols such as their birthday, age, zodiac sign, lucky number, place of birth, heritage,
and other words or images that describe them.

The 3rd grade students have been working on creating shapes to forms.
The use of a vanishing point was introduced and explored with a ruler and pencil.
Our next project used the skills of drawing "zoomers" to make shooting stars and 3D rocket ships.

The Advanced Arts Block studied the genre of landscapes and still life.
Observational drawing skills included line and value, shading and texture. We worked inside the art studio and outdoors.

Ms. Russell's Arts Block worked on a project called *to walk in an artist*s shoe.
We researched a variety of art movements and famous artists. We then selected an artist to inspire our shoe paintings.

The 1st and 3rd grade classes were learning about color mixing.
Each student created a unique image of a vase on a table with the leaves as a bouquet or an image of leaves falling.

Kindergarten classes are learning to draw different shapes and lines as well as how to use colors.
In our most recent projects we talked about friendship and read a book about friendship.
This was our first painting project of the school year!

The grade 4 students have been learning about typography and how to make interesting patterns.
The students created a name tag for their portfolio covers.

Ms. Russell's 8th grade students began the year with a print making project.
We made stamps that combined our name and symbols of things that represent ourselves.
The 8th graders worked on creating French dolls for French Week.
Each doll is in a different outfit because to represent the many French cultures found around the world.

Ms. Russell's 2nd graders began the school year creating "layered paper" projects.
Ms. Russell's 2nd graders are learning to draw what they see.
We drew pumpkins from observation and used chalk pastels to practice color mixing.

Ms. Russell's 3rd graders began the year learning about color and how the eye sees color.
The students learned about textures and how to create creatures in a style similar to Eric Carle.
