Art Program
The arts foster discovery, communicate ideas and feelings, transcend any spoken language, and in result, the arts belong to everyone. The arts link us to our past and present, are a means to self-knowledge and expression, create a method to solve problems and enable the possibilities to manifest. The core concept of the Massachusetts Art Curriculum Frameworks states: "In dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts, people express ideas and emotions that they cannot express in language alone. In order to understand the range and depth of the human imagination, one must have knowledge of the arts."
The arts create a natural enhancement to learning other subjects and focus on the needs of the individual. From an early age, children begin to explore their surroundings through the eyes of an artist. The art program at the Benjamin Franklin Classical
Charter Public School provides each child with the tools and environment to encourage each child's artistic nature.
The arts are used as the interdisciplinary cement to provide a more cohesive curriculum. When students create art, they build self-esteem, make new connections to the world they live in, and find additional methods to express ideas. To be challenged makes us stronger as individuals. To learn something new from a different format encourages us to be independent and creative. Expression of the arts enables us to communicate our feelings, ideas and moods in a manner that contributes and even educates society.
The art program at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School encompasses many aspects of art education including art history, art criticism, aesthetics and art production. The elements and principals of design are introduced and reinforced throughout the course of the child's art experience. Local artists, art masters and a variety of media components are introduced building on previous knowledge and introducing new skills.
Students in grade kindergarten through grade five participate in art enhancement for one forty-five minute session weekly. Grades six through eight participate in a Core Knowledge art history program for one forty-five minute segment a week for half of the school year. Middle school students may also elect a fine arts concentration during the semester meeting twice a week for forty-five minutes. All students are exposed to various forms of media including sculpture, clay, painting, drawing materials and master art works. Students are encouraged to be creative and think independently as well as work collaboratively to enhance their artistic nature. Students are invited to display their work for the school community as well as the community at large. School wide art exhibitions are held several times during the school year and selected artwork is displayed on the school web site and at performances at alternative locations. We invite you to view our work online by visiting the art galleries listed at the top of this web page.
